Infectious Diseases Consultations

We provide interdisciplinary care throughout the Charité for patients with complex infections.

Main areas of focus:

• Consultation regarding diagnostics and therapy
• Advice for treatment of patients with complex infections during their inpatient stay at Charité University Hospital
• Arrangement of outpatient infectious disease follow-up
• Organisation of outpatient infusion anti-infective therapy (OPAT - more information here)
• Charité-wide care of patients with bloodstream infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
• State of the art individual therapy concepts for patients with infections with multi-resistant pathogens

Endocarditis is an infection of the heart valves and consitutes a serious condition.
Current guidelines require care of these patients by a team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, microbiologists and clinical infectious diseases specialists. In consequence, our department convenes an endocarditis review board where each case is thoroughly assessed to formulate the most effective treatment strategy which usually involves lengthy anti-infective therapy.
We offer outpatient infusion anti-infective treatment (OPAT) with the appropriate follow-up care for suitable patients. More information on OPAT can be found here.

Our ID specialists organize an ID Board on a regular schedule where colleagues of any Charité department can present patients with any sort of ID condition. Our interdisciplinary team of clinical ID experts, microbiologists, radiologists, pathologists and any other specialists involved in the individual patient's care discuss the case to reccommend the most suitable diagnostic and therapeutic approach. 

We cooperate with the Standing Working Group of Competence and Treatment Centers for Diseases Caused by Highly Pathogenic Pathogens (STAKOB), with the German Society for Infectiology (DGI) and with the Robert Koch Institute Berlin (RKI) to offer ID consultation for doctors outside the Charité.

Also, we organize monthly web seminars on various ID topics for doctors in hospitals, in outpatient care and in public health.

In addition, we offer an ID telemedical visit for intensive care units of selected Berlin hospitals for which we cooperate with the Department for Anaesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine.
